The Village of Tylerton

The Village of TylertonThe Village of Tylerton

Board the ferry in Crisfield, Maryland for a ten-mile voyage to the village of Tylerton on Maryland's Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay. Tylerton and its fifty plus residents, separated by water from the other two Smith Island towns, is the remote place you didn't think existed anymore. This is the community Tom Horton celebrated in his book, An Island Out of Time.

Discover the long rich history of the Island. The Drum Point Market provides groceries and household supplies along with a lunch counter featuring fresh local seafood, especially crab cakes, and, of course, Smith Island Cake. Other facilities on the Island include the Smith Island Crab Meat Co-op, many piers and boat slips, a public county dock, and more. Tylerton is a short boat ride from Rhodes Point and Ewell, the largest of the three Smith Island towns. The Smith Island Cultural Center in Ewell provides a wealth of information about the island's history and culture. Boats, canoes, kayaks, charter boats for fishing, birding, and crabbing are all available in Tylerton. The famous pelican rookery is just a short distance away. This is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the Solitude in the Rhythm of Nature, and it all could be yours.
